SXSW 2014: Point Blank Preview

The calm before the storm with less than 1 month away. My name is Christian Barbuto – Point Blank’s man on the ground in Austin, Texas – and I’ll be keeping you updated as the festival happens. Look forward to some video footage and some great shots.

Here in Austin, we just finished an epic show at Kingdom Niightclub with Adam Beyer. I had the privilege of the opening slot with local DJ producer Daelo so I’m still on a high and wow is Adam Beyer a great DJ. Kingdom Nightclub has become a popular trend for the big guys to play in a small boutique club with exceptional sound. Now it’s SXSW Music Festival preparation time.

The first SXSW Music Conference was held in 1987. Austin’s reputation as a party town goes back to the Civil War where troops helped to populate night spots on what is now known as 6th St. Eclectic with Mexican, German and Colonial influences, Austin has more music nightspots in a small area than any other city in the world. SXSW is made up of two weeks, the first being Interactive Media & Film and the second being Music and there’s no shortage of exclusive parties during both weeks! The festival is now attracting over 47,000 registered conference participants making the festival one of the biggest in the world. What makes SXSW unique is that it caters to country, rock, hip hop and of course all forms of electronic.

As with a lot of city festivals, there are essentially two beasts operating during SXSW: The official and the unofficial. Events are held all over the city in every and any imaginable space from gas stations and warehouses to rooftops, busses, boats, fields, concert venues and nightclubs. An official wristband gets you into any official show advertised on the SXSW website of which a casual browse could take hours with over 1,700 acts over one week! Fans of dance music often turn to the unofficial events to satisfy their palettes relying on word of mouth, checking any and all sources online as well as artist pages to find out who’s been billed.

Check out SXSW’s official website for more information on the festival and its history and check out what we are up to locally at Electric Avenue’s website.
