Bilal & Adrian Younge recently took the trip cross-pond to perform at Gilles Peterson‘s Worldwide Awards in London and while they were in the vicinity, made sure to hit Peterson’s Brownswood Studio for a session in what has to be one of the illest basements that ever was. The two musical madmen and kindred spirits made their presence known while in the legendary understructure, recording three tracks from their forthcoming collaborative album (due out this spring.) And today we’re proud to present you with their minimal treatment of a track that should be more than familiar at this point, “Sirens II.” The fellas strip their track bare, leaving B on Rhodes, supplanting the howl of the studio cut with a scratchy, smokey lull, all while Younge handles low-end duties like a pro on the bass.
The most amazing thing about this performance is watching Bilal using his superhuman voice powers in such a small space, exercising the control and restraint necessary to knock the song out the park without unleashing the banshee on those closest to him. If you’re wondering who those fortunate few sitting in on this intimate and impromptu live jam are, oh that’s just Taylor McFerrin, prodigious drummer Marcus Gilmore and the lovely Fatima resting in the wings, being serenaded by all that magic stuff. Watch as Bilal and Adrian Younge deliver the most minimal rendition yet of “Sirens II” live from Brownswood Studio’s basement below and be sure to keep your ear to the ground, as we’ll have more on their forthcoming collaborative project in the weeks and months to come.
