This past weekend Michael Sam, a defensive end from the University of Missouri announced that he was gay.
In an exclusive sit down with the NY Times, the 24 year-old college football star opened up about his truth.
I came out to my team this last August. And coming out to them, they rallied around me and supported me. I was kind of nervous, I was like man, I’m actually doing it but saying it and how everyone [reacted] it was so awesome. These are my teammates, these are my brothers.
I’m coming out because I want to own my truth. Two weeks ago at the Senior Bowl, I didn’t realize how many people actually knew about my sexual orientation. So I just want to own my truth before anyone breaks a story about me.
He is projected to be an early-round draft pick and would become the first publicly gay NFL player.
