In an exclusive mix for BBC Radio 1 presenter Annie Mac, Ellie Goulding has revealed a brand new track from Skillex. The tune, called ‘Because’, is a super interesting change in direction for the Grammy-certified King of Wubs, but weirdly enough no one seems to be shouting about it. So let’s do that.
HOLY FUCK NEW SKRILLEX! IT IS DEFINITELY MUSIC MADE BY SKRILLEX THAT IS VERY NEW!
Good. Now let’s continue.
The mix recently appeared online as part of Annie Mac’s Free Music Mondays (FMM) series. FMM usually sees a track from a rising producer being put up for free download on Mac’s SoundCloud page, but it’s probably fair to shake things up with this stream-only mix – it’s pretty spesh.
‘Because’ is a far cry from the screeches and wobbles that Skrillex is most known for. In fact it’s probably what his breakout song ‘Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites’ would sound like without all those harsh elements; all that’s left is blissful melodies and tight, hard-hitting percussion.
It’s possible that the track was influenced by his time spent in Australia with Flume, but listening back to Skrillex’s last solo release makes it clear that he’s not letting himself be defined by the stadium-sized tracks that put him in the spotlight. We couldn’t be happier about that at Stoney Roads HQ. Keep those creative juices flowing Skrilly!
You can stream Ellie Goulding’s entire 41 minute mix below. The new Skrillex jam kicks in around 36:10, but listen out for a bunch of other exclusives throughout the mix.
