Blood Orange AKA Dev Hynes‘ ensemble of one (as far as the studio is concerned) has been a bit quiet as of late. Perhaps its due to the fact that everyone and their mamas want a piece of Hynes in the studio. But today we’ve finally got a new taste of the pop-perfect frequencies Hynes’ has been cooking up for himself while occupying all these other damn kitchens. “Delancey” appeared in all of its synth&cello-kissed glory early this morning on Dev’s site and while certainly rough (meaning not in it’s complete form, as opposed to a texture thing) it implies Dev’s pop-funk experiment might be leaning more towards the smokey r&b side of things. And we ain’t mad.
While there hasn’t been much in the form of solo material to put through your ears in 2014, the year certainly proved to be fruitful in terms of features, landing on cuts by Heems, Jessie Ware, Emile Haynie and more, not to mention recording with Miss “Call Me Maybe” herself Carly Rae Jepson and scoring runway shows in the few free moments he seems to have outside of the studio. Whether this is our first taste of the Cupid Deluxe follow-up or not, it’s a highly enjoyable sketch that’ll help guide you through the drought. Listen to the “Delancey” demo below and hold tight for all things Dev.
