Benny The Butcher Addresses Alleged J. Cole Diss

Benny The Butcher has dedicated a few bars from a new song to those who are convinced that J. Cole dissed him on a 2022 collaboration.

On the track “The Blue Building,” which appears on his latest album Summertime Butch, the Buffalo, NY MC shut down the idea that Cole’s guest verse on the Tana Talk 4 song “Johnny P’s Caddy” included a sneak diss aimed at Butch himself.

Trolls tell me I got dissed by Cole on my record / I’m like, ‘Is y’all slow?’ That’s my n***a,” the Griselda rapper spits. “We having hour-long conversations from home / I’m picking his brain on my way to the throne, I ain’t no dumb n***a I ain’t get here focusing on figures alone, I played more of the distributor role / He told me, ‘Butch, if you see yourself winning, you got a vision to throw.’

Summertime Butch comes on the heels of Benny’s earlier 2024 release Everybody Can’t Gowhich came out in January. That project features guest appearances from Lil WayneSnoop DoggStove God Cooks,  JadakissBabyface Ray, and more; as well as Griselda stalwarts Armani CaesarWestside Gunn and Conway The Machine.

“The 12-cut package is a concoction of sharply digitized beats and eloquent instrumentation in mechanical form, processed further to synthesize hard-headed mafioso bars,” wrote HipHopDX‘s Karan Singh at the time.

“Lyrically, Everybody Can’t Go is the latest addition to the empirical evidence piling up in favor of Benny The Butcher’s craftiness with words — the manner in which he presents his story unlocks new perspectives even when he runs back certain themes and concepts.

“Whereas a lot of the Buffalo spitter’s peers stay struggling to retain their identities while holding people’s attention, he’s made the dominant brand of yesterday’s Hip Hop scene his niche in the current landscape and ensured that fans of all ages turn to his team when they have a craving for it.”
