There’s a lot of dance music out there, and there’s a lot of people making it. Every now and again someone comes out with one super incredible chart-topping hit, only to be never heard of again. Here’s our favourite one hit wonders from the dance music world. Enjoy!
Eiffel 65, ‘Blue’
This is SUCH a good song! The Italian euro-dance-pop act blew us all outta the water with the thumping, lyrically ambiguous ‘Blue.’ Sure, they also released ‘Move Your Body,’ but ‘Blue’ was huge that they make it onto our one hit wonder list.
DJ Sammy, ‘Heaven’
What a tuuuune! A cover of a 1983 Bryan Adams song, this single went on to become one of the defining dance hits of the early 2000s. Reaching the top 10 charts in 11 countries, it actually entered the charts twice – in 2002 and again in 2007.
Alice DeeJay, ‘Better Off Alone’
Ahh, another classic ’90s hit. Why did that decade have to ever end? 🙁 The Dutch hit was actually originally an instrumental track, but that famous lyric line was added in after member Sebastiaan Molijn’s partner broke up with him.
Haddaway, ‘What Is Love?’
The song so good that it spawned its own meme decades after release, this Trinidadian-German hit is the quintessential one hit wonder. Having reached the number one chart spot in 13 countries, it currently sits at 35 million YouTube plays.
Stardust, ‘Music Sounds Better With You’
So this might be one of the more interesting songs on this track, because one of the members of Stardust is in fact Thomas Bangalter, one half of Daft Punk. Bangalter was reportedly offered $3 million to produce a full Stardust album, but this remains their one and only song ever.
Dirty Vegas, ‘Days Go By’
This was a hit twice: first in the charts in 2001/2002, and then later again as part of a widely seen ad for the Mitsubishi Eclipse. The pumping bass and mellow vocals are super smooth and sultry – it’s a shame they didn’t really follow it up with anything else.
Mylo, ‘Drop the Pressure’
What a track! The Scottish producer came out of nowhere, dropped a bombshell of an album, and we’ve kind of not heard from him since. ‘Drop The Pressure’ was the obvious standout, (although his own mashup of the song, ‘Dr Pressure’ – himself vs Miami Sound Machine – was pretty big too.)
DJ Jean, ‘The Launch’
’90s Eurodance really just is the gift that keeps on giving. DJ Jean’s trance-focused tune with that sweet, sweet bass is instantly recognisable and catchy as hell. Fun fact: in the Dutch charts, it landed the top spot for two weeks – Britney Spears’ ‘…One More Time’ was number one both before and afterwards.
Techtronic, ‘Pump Up The Jam’
Ohhhhh, thumpin’! Another track that was originally supposed to be an instrumental, that vocal loop has been sampled on countless tracks – including in a Weird Al Yankovic song. This track has the added bonus of having by FAR the cheesiest, best video clip on this list.
ATC, ‘All Around The World’
Finally, ATC. What a classic, loved tune. The kind of song that gets stuck in your head for weeks on end, the German hit is actually a cover of a Russian original. It hit number one in 2000 and has since received nearly 44 million YouTube views.
